Weeping Tree at Ste. Genevieve: Missouri’s Second Legends & Lore Marker Installed

Exciting news! Additional Missouri community adds Legends & Lore marker!

Ste. Genevieve Tourism Department installed a roadside marker this year that tells the story of an unusual phenomenon related to noted U.S. Senator and physician Lewis F. Linn.

Roadside marker for Ste. Genevieve's Weeping Tree

The inscription reads:

WEEPING TREE
A CHERRY TREE KEEPING VIGIL
OVER SENATOR LEWIS LINN’S
GRAVE WEPT WHEN HIS BODY
WAS MOVED IN 1905. HIS BODY
WAS RETURNED HERE IN 1938.

In the image below, also courtesy of Ste. Genevieve Tourism Department, the cherry tree now keeps vigil over the senator’s final resting place and the marker. Visitors can find the marker, tree, and burial place at the Memorial Cemetery, across the street from 12 N. 5th St, Ste. Genevieve, MO 63670, USA.
